are we really ever alone?

living in the city seems to have the inherent quality of prohibiting aloneness. it doesn't seem that there is anywhere that i can go where i am not bombarded with other people's comings and goings. or just doings.

it's late. i am the only one in my neighbourhood still up, or at least in the immediate vicinity of my deck. yet still there are sounds of the regular goings on of the city. people driving on nearby roads. backyard lights blazing in the middle of the night. even the existence of my own house reminds me visually that this area has been 'settled'. and maybe that's the problem -- far too many of us have 'settled' instead of going after our highest dreams.

but that's a topic for another evening....
